auðþræðinn, literally “the golden thread,” is a term used in Icelandic language and literature to denote a metaphorical thread of fate, life, or connection that runs through people and events. The word combines auð (“wealth” or “gold”) with þráðinn, the definite form of þráður, thread, with the definite article -inn attached.

In Icelandic folklore and Norse-inspired storytelling, threads are common symbols of destiny and interconnection. The idea of a thread that binds individuals to their ancestors, to pivotal life events, or to a shared communal history is echoed in weaving motifs and proverbs that suggest small actions can alter the pattern of one’s life. The term auðþræðinn emphasizes a precious or binding quality—the thread is golden because it carries value and significance.
