The term originates from the Greek words *autopsia*, meaning "to see with one's own eyes." This medical procedure is typically conducted by a forensic pathologist or coroner, particularly when death is unexpected, violent, or suspicious.

The process involves a thorough external and internal examination of the body. Initially, the pathologist performs an external inspection, noting visible signs such as wounds, bruises, or signs of decomposition. Following this, an internal examination is carried out, often through an incision known as a Y-shaped or J-shaped "Y-incision" to access the chest, abdomen, and sometimes the brain. Organs are then removed, weighed, and examined for abnormalities, while tissue samples may be taken for laboratory analysis.

Autopsies serve multiple purposes beyond determining the cause of death. They aid in medical research by identifying previously unknown diseases or contributing to epidemiological studies. In legal contexts, autopsies provide critical evidence in criminal investigations, helping to establish guilt or innocence.
