Autonomia is a political concept referring to a degree of self-government granted to a region or group within a sovereign state. In Finnish, autonomia describes an arrangement in which a part of the state has authority to govern many of its own affairs while remaining within the overall sovereignty of the national government. The adessive form autonomiassa translates roughly as "in autonomy" and is used to describe a region or status when it is governed autonomously.

Autonomy can be constitutional or de facto and may apply to legislative, administrative, fiscal, or cultural matters. Types include internal autonomy (local legislatures and executive powers), cultural or linguistic autonomy (guarantees for minority languages and education), and fiscal or tax autonomy (own revenue or tax collection with centralized transfers). Examples include the Åland Islands within Finland, with their own parliament, language rights, and tax authority; the Basque Country and Catalonia within Spain, each governed by an autonomous statute; Scotland within the United Kingdom, which has devolved powers; and Greenland within Denmark, with extensive self-rule. Autonomy arrangements vary in scope and permanence and are often the subject of ongoing political negotiation and legal adjustment.

Legal frameworks for autonomy usually arise from constitutions, statutes, or international agreements. They define competences, financial arrangements, and whether autonomy can be expanded, contracted, or revoked. The status can be popular with regional identities but can also provoke disputes over sovereignty, resource control, and national unity.

Historically, autonomy movements have emerged from desires for national, ethnic, or cultural recognition, administrative efficiency, or fiscal relief. The concept remains central to debates about federalism, devolution, and self-determination.
