Autoadeziv, or self-adhesive, refers to a class of materials designed to bond to surfaces with a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) under light, contact pressure, without the need for solvents or heat. The typical construction consists of a face stock (the backing material) coated with an adhesive on one side and protected by a release liner that is removed before use. When pressed onto a surface, the PSA forms a bond through tack and intermolecular forces.

Backings can be paper, film (such as polypropylene or polyester), or metal foil. Liner materials are silicone-coated papers or films that allow easy release. The adhesive itself falls into several categories: acrylic-based PSAs, known for aging resistance and clarity; rubber-based PSAs, which offer high initial tack and lower cost; and silicone-based PSAs, chosen for high-temperature or specialty applications.

Formats and uses include labels, tags, tapes, stickers, laminates, medical devices, electronics, and automotive applications. Self-adhesive systems enable fast, clean application in automated and manual processes. Key properties include tack, adhesion, cohesion, temperature and UV resistance, and chemical compatibility. Performance depends on surface energy, substrate roughness, pressure applied, and environmental conditions.

Variations encompass permanent, removable, and repositionable adhesives, as well as specialty PSAs for low-surface-energy plastics, high-humidity environments, or food-contact applications. Environmental considerations include liner waste and recycling challenges, while safety and regulatory aspects focus on material composition and suitability for intended use.
