The Austronesialaiset (also known as Austronesian peoples) are a diverse group of ethnic and linguistic communities spread across the Indo-Pacific region, from Madagascar in the west to Easter Island in the east. Their languages, collectively referred to as Austronesian languages, are among the most widely distributed language families in the world, with over 1,200 distinct dialects spoken by approximately 400 million people.

The origins of the Austronesialaiset can be traced back to the Taiwan-Austronesian hypothesis, which suggests that their ancestors migrated from Taiwan around 6,000–5,000 years ago. From there, they gradually expanded into the Philippines, Southeast Asia, and eventually reached remote islands like Polynesia and Micronesia through a series of seafaring voyages. This migration pattern is often referred to as the Austronesian expansion, one of the most significant human dispersal events in history.

Culturally, Austronesialaiset societies exhibit a rich variety of traditions, including maritime navigation techniques, intricate weaving, and unique agricultural practices. Many groups, particularly in Polynesia, developed advanced seafaring skills, enabling long-distance travel and settlement across vast oceanic regions. Their cultural heritage is also reflected in oral traditions, mythology, and artistic expressions, such as tattooing (e.g., Polynesian *tatau* and Māori *tā moko*).

Today, Austronesialaiset peoples inhabit numerous countries, including Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan, Vietnam, and various Pacific Island nations. While their languages and customs vary significantly, they share common linguistic roots and historical connections that underscore their shared heritage. Efforts to preserve Austronesian languages and traditions continue, as many face challenges from globalization and cultural assimilation.
