Ausculta is a Latin word, the imperative singular form of auscultare, meaning "listen" or "hear." The term has been adopted into several modern contexts, most notably as the linguistic root of auscultation, the medical practice of listening to internal body sounds. In Latin texts and historical documents, ausculta appears in directives, headings and phrases that call for attention or examination.

In medicine, the root gives rise to terminology relating to the clinical technique of listening to respiratory, cardiac and abdominal sounds using a stethoscope or other acoustic devices. Auscultation is used to assess normal and pathological sounds—such as heart murmurs, breath sounds, and bowel noises—and remains a fundamental component of clinical examination despite the availability of advanced imaging.
