Aurinkovoideiden, known in English as sunscreens, are products designed to protect the skin from the harmful effects of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation. They work by absorbing, reflecting, or scattering UV rays, thereby preventing sunburn, premature aging, and reducing the risk of skin cancer.

There are two primary types of sunscreens: chemical and physical. Chemical sunscreens contain organic compounds that absorb UV radiation and convert it into heat, which is then released from the skin. Physical sunscreens, also known as mineral sunscreens, contain mineral ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that sit on the surface of the skin and create a physical barrier to block UV rays.

The effectiveness of a sunscreen is measured by its Sun Protection Factor (SPF), which indicates how well it protects against UVB rays, the primary cause of sunburn. A higher SPF number generally means greater protection. It is recommended to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen, which protects against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays contribute to skin aging and can also increase the risk of skin cancer.

Sunscreens are available in various forms, including lotions, creams, sprays, gels, and sticks, making them convenient for different applications and skin types. For optimal protection, sunscreen should be applied generously to all exposed skin at least 15-30 minutes before sun exposure and reapplied every two hours, or more frequently after swimming or sweating. Consistent use of sunscreen is a crucial part of a comprehensive sun protection strategy.
