Athematic is an adjective used primarily in historical linguistics to describe certain word forms that lack a thematic vowel or other linking element that characterizes a related class. The term is most often applied to Proto-Indo-European and descendant languages, where verb stems are historically categorized as thematic or athematic based on how they attach inflectional endings to the stem.
