Astrometric refers to astrometry, the branch of astronomy concerned with the precise measurement of the positions and motions of celestial objects. Astrometric data enable the determination of distances through parallax, the study of proper motions across the sky, and the establishment of accurate positions within a standardized reference frame. Measurements are typically expressed in celestial coordinates, such as right ascension and declination, and tied to a specific epoch and reference frame.

Key quantities in astrometric work include angular position, parallax (the apparent shift of a nearby object against distant background objects as the observer’s vantage point changes), proper motion (the apparent motion of an object across the sky over time), and angular separations between objects. Distances follow from parallax via trigonometry, while proper motions reveal the kinematics of stars and other objects within the Galaxy.

Techniques used in astrometry range from direct imaging and differential astrometry to the use of CCD or CMOS detectors and interferometric methods. Historically, plate measurements played a central role, but modern astrometry relies on high-precision digital imaging and optical interferometry. Space-based missions have dramatically improved accuracy by removing atmospheric effects. Notable programs include the Hipparcos mission in the 1990s and the Gaia mission, launched in 2013, both providing extensive catalogs of positions, parallaxes, and proper motions. Ground-based approaches continue to advance with adaptive optics and very-long-baseline interferometry.

Applications of astrometric methods include constructing three-dimensional maps of the Milky Way, refining the celestial reference frame, calibrating distance scales, and enabling exoplanet detection through the reflex motion of stars. Astrometric measurements also support tests of fundamental physics and contribute to precise spacecraft navigation.
