associava

Associava is the imperfect indicative form of the Portuguese verb associar, meaning to join, connect, or form an association. It is used in narrative and descriptive prose to indicate a past, ongoing, or repeated action of linking people, ideas, or organizations. The verb derives from Latin associāre, formed from ad- “toward” and socius “companion.”

In typical usage, associava describes activities such as forming groups, partnerships, or networks, or the mental act of linking concepts after prior discussion. Example: "Ela associava várias organizações para promover a pesquisa." The form can also appear in reflexive constructions, as in associava-se, to indicate that someone joined or allied with others.

As a common verb form, associava appears across a range of registers in both Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese, with regional stylistic preferences influencing its frequency and placement in text.
