The name “Asimilat” is derived from the ancient Lumerian word asim, meaning “bright”, and lat, denoting “plain”, reflecting the town’s historical reputation for fertile fields that shine under the highland sun.

The earliest records of settlement in the area date to the 12th century, when a small agrarian community formed around a seasonal market. By the 16th century, Asimilat had become a recognized waypoint for traders moving between the coastal ports and the inland mining districts. The town’s layout retains a traditional grid pattern centered on the Plaza de la Luz, where a 17th‑century stone church, the Church of Saint Mira, stands as the most prominent architectural landmark.

As of the 2023 census, Asimilat has a population of roughly 7,200 residents, the majority of whom are engaged in mixed farming, particularly cultivation of barley, potatoes, and high‑altitude beans.
