Asennonhallintajärjestelmä, commonly known as ESP (Electronic Stability Program) or ESC (Electronic Stability Control), is a crucial safety feature in modern vehicles. Its primary function is to prevent loss of traction and maintain control of the vehicle during critical driving situations, such as sudden swerving or skidding. The system works by continuously monitoring the vehicle's steering angle, wheel speed sensors, and lateral acceleration.

When the system detects that the vehicle is about to skid or lose control, it intervenes by automatically applying individual brakes to specific wheels. This targeted braking helps to correct the vehicle's trajectory and steer it back into the intended path. In addition to braking, the system may also reduce engine power if necessary to further assist in regaining control.

ESP is particularly effective in preventing accidents caused by oversteer or understeer. Oversteer occurs when the rear of the car loses grip and slides outwards, while understeer happens when the front wheels lose grip and the car fails to turn as directed by the steering wheel. ESP helps to counteract both of these dangerous situations. The system is designed to work seamlessly and often activates without the driver being fully aware of its intervention, contributing significantly to road safety by reducing the risk of single-vehicle accidents and rollovers.
