Artist activism, also known as artivism, is the practice of artists using creative work to advocate for social, political, or environmental change. It encompasses how art engages with public life, policy debates, and community organizing, often aiming to raise awareness, influence opinion, or mobilize action beyond traditional advocacy channels.

Practices include public art interventions, performance and theater, visual and digital art, documentary and archival projects, socially engaged or participatory works, and fundraising or awareness campaigns linked to social movements. Artists may work independently or in collaboration with communities, NGOs, or activist groups to address issues such as human rights, climate justice, inequality, and democratic accountability.

Historically, artist activism has deep roots in 20th-century movements as well as contemporary campaigns. Notable strands include feminist and civil rights art, anti-war and anti-colonial art, and today’s global currents of environmental art and digital activism. Notable figures and collectives include the Guerrilla Girls, Banksy, Ai Weiwei, Yoko Ono, The Yes Men, and various community-based art practices worldwide that foreground participation and co-creation.

Impact and critique: artist activism can draw attention, disrupt the status quo, and foster community empowerment, but it can also raise concerns about effectiveness, performativity, safety, and the risk of co-optation or commodification. Assessments of impact vary, emphasizing both cultural influence and concrete policy or behavioral changes. Ethics and consent are central when working with marginalized groups or vulnerable communities.
