These arterial-to-arterial connections can arise from a variety of causes. Congenital malformations, where the blood vessels do not develop correctly during gestation, are one possibility. Acquired arteriovenous fistulas can occur due to trauma, such as penetrating injuries that damage adjacent arteries and cause them to abnormally connect. In some cases, the abnormal flow could lead to the dilation or weakening of the involved arteries, increasing the risk of aneurysm formation.
