Arteriovenöösien is a Finnish term that translates to arteriovenous in English. It refers to a direct connection between an artery and a vein, bypassing the usual network of capillaries. This abnormal connection is known as an arteriovenous malformation (AVM). In a healthy circulatory system, arteries carry oxygenated blood away from the heart under high pressure, and veins carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart under lower pressure. Capillaries are tiny blood vessels that facilitate the exchange of oxygen, nutrients, and waste products between the blood and tissues.

When an arteriovenous malformation is present, blood flows directly from the high-pressure arterial system into the low-pressure venous system. This can cause several problems. The abnormal flow can lead to increased pressure in the veins, potentially causing them to enlarge or rupture. The surrounding tissues may not receive adequate oxygenated blood because it is shunted away through the AVM. Arteriovenous malformations can occur in various parts of the body, including the brain, lungs, and limbs. Depending on their location and size, they can cause symptoms ranging from pain and swelling to more serious complications like bleeding or stroke. Diagnosis typically involves imaging techniques such as angiography. Treatment options depend on the specific AVM and may include embolization, surgery, or radiation therapy.
