Arílicos refers to a group of organic compounds characterized by the presence of at least one acrylic functional group. The acrylic functional group, also known as a propenoyl group, has the structure CH2=CH-CO-. This structure features a vinyl group (CH2=CH-) directly attached to a carbonyl group (-CO-). The presence of the double bond in the vinyl group makes arílicos highly reactive, particularly susceptible to addition polymerization.

The simplest and most common arílico is acrylic acid itself, CH2=CH-COOH. Acrylic acid and its derivatives are widely used as monomers in the production of polymers and copolymers. These polymers find applications in a vast array of products. For example, poly(acrylic acid) is used in superabsorbent polymers for diapers and other absorbent materials, as well as in thickeners and dispersants. Esters of acrylic acid, known as acrylates, such as methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, and butyl acrylate, are essential components in the manufacturing of paints, coatings, adhesives, textiles, and plastics.

The polymerization of arílicos can be initiated by various methods, including free radical, anionic, or cationic polymerization. The resulting polymers often exhibit desirable properties such as flexibility, durability, and resistance to chemicals and weathering. The versatility and wide range of applications stemming from the acrylic functional group make arílicos a significant class of compounds in the chemical industry.
