apuhjelmistot

Apuhjelmistot are a type of Finnish defence work, specifically a type of non-military wooden coastal watchtower. The name "apuhjelmisto" can be translated as "auxiliary watchtower" or "auxiliary fortification" in English.

Apuhjelmistot were constructed along the Finnish coast during World War I and World War II as part of the country's extensive coastal defence system. These watchtowers were designed to serve as additional surveillance and lookout points for coastal artillery and other coastal defenses.

Apuhjelmistot were typically independent towers, not connected to any other defensive structure. They were usually made of wood and were two or three stories high. They typically had a more modest size compared to larger military fortifications and were not always built on a concrete foundation.

Inside the watchtowers, there were usually simple crew quarters and a control room for observing the surroundings. Some apuhjelmistot were equipped with small opening platforms for spotting enemy ships or aircraft.

The construction of apuhjelmistot matches the timeline of Finnish coastal defence systems built during the wars. There are still many apuhjelmistos standing along the Finnish coast, some of them in fairly good condition, giving visitors a glimpse into the country's military past.

Over time, many apuhjelmistos have been converted into museums or have been adapted for private residential use after its abandonment and deactivation. However, some stood unused for the rest of the 20th century until decided demolition.
