Aprotichens are a fascinating group of symbiotic organisms composed of a fungus and an alga or cyanobacterium. The fungal partner, called the mycobiont, provides structure and protection, while the photosynthetic partner, the photobiont, produces food through photosynthesis. There are thousands of lichen species, exhibiting a wide array of forms, colors, and textures. They can be crustose, growing tightly attached to a surface; foliose, with leaf-like lobes; or fruticose, appearing shrub-like or pendulous.
