An apoteka is a pharmacy or drugstore in several South Slavic languages, and in some neighboring languages as well. The term derives from the Greek apothekē meaning “storehouse,” via Latin apotheca, and is cognate with the German Apotheke. In modern usage, an apoteka is a licensed facility where medicines are dispensed and health advice is provided.

The primary role of an apoteka is to dispense prescribed medicines and to offer guidance on their correct use. Pharmacists and pharmacy staff review prescriptions for accuracy, potential drug interactions, duplications, and allergies; they advise patients on dosing, storage, and possible side effects. In addition to prescription medicines, many apoteke stock over-the-counter remedies, medical supplies, and basic health products. Some apoteke also provide services such as compounding medicines, vaccination, basic health screenings, and patient counseling.

Staffing and operation can vary: community apoteke are common in towns and cities and are typically open to the public, while hospital or institutional apoteke serve hospitals and clinics. In many countries, apoteka staff must be licensed pharmacists or trained technicians, and operations are governed by national regulations to ensure safety, labeling, and pharmacovigilance.

Regulation and access are influenced by national health systems. Pharmacy practice often includes confidentiality, record-keeping, and reporting of adverse drug events. With the growth of digital health, some apoteke offer online services or mail-order dispensing, though traditional in-person counseling remains central to patient care.

Historically, apoteka evolved from early apothecaries that prepared and sold medicines. Today they are essential points of care within health systems, balancing access to medicines with professional guidance and safety.
