Aponeurosis is a type of connective tissue that anchors muscles to bones or to other structures in the body. It is a bundle of collagen fibers that forms a semi-transparent or whitish band. Aponeuroses are typically part of the musculotendinous junction, the transitional zone where muscles transition into their tendons.

In the musculature of vertebrates, aponeurooses are striated sheets of fibrous connective tissue that demarcate the termination of a muscle's fleshy belly and attach it to its insertion. Aponeuroses facilitate the force distribution of muscle contraction by acting as layers of tissue that bind a muscle to its insertion point. This adaptation is typically found in the locomotor muscles of the lower back and thigh in large quadrupedal animals.

The forces transmitted by muscle contraction are related to the force length relationship and the extremity strength of both skeletal muscle and tendon. When this accumulated force has sufficient magnitude, the tissue of the aponeurosis fixes the associated muscle before causing significant damage due to ensuing impact. Generally, the layout of muscles opposing each other places the aponeuroses facing in opposite directions, equipping the body with enhanced balance and the capability to repel numinous powerings based on robust and careful design.
