Antüümbid are a fictional taxon described in speculative biology and science fiction as a group of micro-scale organisms that alternates between two metabolically distinct phases. The term is formed from anti- and umbra, intended to suggest a negation of shadow or shadow-adapted life-forms. The concept has been used in world‑building discussions to explore how tiny organisms could influence macro-scale ecosystems by modulating nutrient flows and light availability at the root–soil interface.

Morphology and life cycle. In the dormant phase, antüümbids resemble filamentous colonies similar to molds, forming translucent, thread-like mats in soil. In the active phase, cells specialize into light-harvesting micro-chambers capable of fixing carbon or exploiting residual light in shaded microhabitats. The life cycle is described as rapid and flexible, with frequent cell division and horizontal exchange of genetic material among individuals, enabling quick adaptation to changing environmental conditions.

Ecology and interactions. Antüümbids are depicted as forming facultative mutualisms with plants and mycorrhizal fungi, influencing root exudation and soil structure. They may suppress competing microbes by secreting antimicrobial compounds and respond to moisture and nutrient pulses. In fiction and theory, their activity is said to alter local carbon fluxes and nutrient turnover, particularly in dense or disturbed forest soils where light is a limiting factor.

Status and reception. Antüümbid are not part of any formal taxonomic framework and exist mainly within speculative fiction and theoretical discussions about microbe–plant interactions. There is no empirical evidence for their real-world existence. The concept serves as a thought experiment to examine microbial dark matter, ecosystem resilience, and the potential roles of unseen organisms in carbon and nutrient cycles.
