Antændingstype refers to the method by which a fuel-air mixture is ignited in an internal combustion engine. There are two primary types: spark ignition and compression ignition.

Spark ignition, commonly found in gasoline engines, utilizes a spark plug to initiate combustion. A high-voltage electrical discharge across the spark plug gap creates a spark that ignites the compressed fuel-air mixture within the cylinder. This method allows for precise control over the timing of combustion, which is crucial for optimizing engine performance and efficiency.

Compression ignition, characteristic of diesel engines, relies on the heat generated by compressing air to a sufficiently high temperature. In this system, only air is drawn into the cylinder and compressed to very high pressures. This compression raises the air temperature significantly. Fuel is then injected into this hot air, and the high temperature causes the fuel to ignite spontaneously without the need for a spark. This process typically results in higher thermal efficiency compared to spark ignition.
