Antiskum is a category of additives used to prevent or reduce foaming in liquids. It comprises compounds or mixtures that rapidly migrate to the gas–liquid interface of rising bubbles, forming a temporary film that lowers surface tension and destabilizes bubbles. The result is a reduction in foam formation and easier control of foaming during processing.

Common forms of antiskum include silicone-based antifoams (notably polydimethylsiloxanes and related fluids), mineral oil–based antifoams, and various fatty esters or solid antifoams. They are selected for compatibility with the host liquid, temperature range, and the desired level of foam control. Antiskum agents are typically effective at very low concentrations.

Food-grade antifoams must meet specific safety and labeling standards, while non-food applications emphasize compatibility and environmental impact. Environmental considerations vary by type; silicone-based agents are effective but not always readily biodegradable and require appropriate wastewater management.
