Antisatellite weapons (ASATs) are military systems designed to destroy or disable satellites in orbit. These weapons pose significant challenges to space security, as they can disrupt satellite communications, navigation, reconnaissance, and other critical functions relied upon by both civilian and military operations. The development and deployment of ASATs have been a subject of international concern due to the potential for escalating space conflicts and creating debris that endangers other spacecraft.

ASAT technologies have evolved over time, ranging from kinetic kill vehicles—projectiles that collide with satellites at high speeds—to directed-energy weapons, such as lasers or microwaves, which can disable or damage satellites without physical contact. Some systems also employ electronic warfare techniques to jam satellite signals. The first known ASAT test occurred in 1959, when the Soviet Union destroyed a Soviet satellite with a surface-to-air missile. Since then, several nations, including the United States, China, India, and Russia, have conducted ASAT demonstrations, raising tensions in space governance.

The proliferation of ASAT capabilities has led to debates about arms control and the potential for a space arms race. The debris generated from ASAT tests can remain in orbit for decades, increasing the risk of collisions with operational satellites and creating a cascading effect known as the Kessler Syndrome. This phenomenon could make certain orbital regions unusable for generations. International efforts, such as the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, prohibit the placement of weapons of mass destruction in orbit but do not explicitly ban ASAT weapons, leaving room for interpretation and potential misuse.

Critics argue that ASATs could destabilize space security by encouraging preemptive strikes on satellites, particularly in times of conflict. Supporters, however, contend that they are necessary for defending against adversarial space assets. The development of ASATs continues to be a contentious issue in global security discussions, with ongoing efforts to establish norms and agreements to prevent an uncontrolled escalation in space militarization.
