Antiflutter refers to the set of design methods, devices, and control strategies used to prevent or mitigate aeroelastic flutter in aerospace structures. Flutter is a self-excited oscillation that arises from the interaction between aerodynamic forces, structural dynamics, and flight conditions. It can affect wings, tails, rotor blades, and other flexible components, potentially leading to excessive vibrations or structural failure if not controlled. Antiflutter aims to keep a vehicle’s dynamic response within safe limits across its operating envelope.

Antiflutter approaches are usually categorized as passive or active. Passive antiflutter involves structural and aerodynamic design choices that inherently reduce flutter risk, such as mass balancing of control surfaces to shift the center of gravity, adding dampers or stiffening members, reducing structural flexibility, and shaping aerodynamic profiles. Active antiflutter uses sensors, actuators, and real-time control algorithms to suppress flutter during flight. These systems, often called active flutter suppression systems, measure vibrations and apply corrective inputs to the structure or control surfaces in a way that counteracts the unstable modes.

The design and verification of antiflutter measures rely on aeroelastic modeling, finite element analysis, and wind tunnel testing, followed by careful flight testing under representative conditions. Standards and certification processes for aircraft typically address flutter margins and the reliability of antiflutter solutions. While antiflutter is most associated with aircraft wings and empennage, the concept also applies to rotorcraft blades, propellers, and other flexible structures in aerospace and related industries, including wind turbines and high-speed unmanned systems.
