Anticyklon is a meteorological term referring to a high-pressure system. In such systems, atmospheric pressure is significantly higher than that of the surrounding atmosphere. Air within an anticyclone typically sinks, or subsides, from the upper atmosphere towards the surface. This sinking motion warms the air, inhibiting the formation of clouds and leading to clear skies and settled weather.

The circulation of air around an anticyclone in the Northern Hemisphere is clockwise, while in the Southern Hemisphere, it is counter-clockwise. This is a consequence of the Coriolis effect. Anticyclones are generally associated with stable atmospheric conditions, meaning there is little vertical movement of air. This stability often results in periods of calm weather, which can include sunshine and light winds, or conversely, prolonged periods of fog or smog trapping near the surface, especially in winter.

Anticyclones can vary greatly in size, from small, localized features to vast systems that can cover thousands of kilometers. Their movement across the Earth's surface is influenced by prevailing wind patterns. When an anticyclone is stationary over a region for an extended period, it can lead to heatwaves in the summer or cold snaps in the winter, depending on the season and the source of the air mass. They are a fundamental component of atmospheric circulation and play a crucial role in weather forecasting.
