Antagonism is the condition or relation in which one entity opposes, inhibits, or reduces the function or effect of another. The term derives from Greek anti- “against” and agonismos “contest, struggle.” In scientific usage, antagonism denotes a functional opposition between two elements, though the exact meaning varies by discipline.

In pharmacology and biochemistry, an antagonist is a substance that binds to a receptor or enzyme and blocks activation by an agonist. Competitive antagonists compete for the same binding site; noncompetitive antagonists act elsewhere or modify receptor function. Classic examples include naloxone reversing opioid effects, atropine blocking muscarinic receptors, and beta-blockers blocking adrenergic receptors.

In ecology, antagonistic interactions reduce the fitness of one or both participants, often via predation, parasitism, or herbivory. These interactions can drive coevolution, population dynamics, and resource use, and they contrast with mutualistic or commensal relationships. Antagonism can be context-dependent, varying with environmental conditions and species traits.

In psychology and personality research, antagonism refers to a trait-like tendency toward hostility, deceit, and antagonistic behavior, sometimes described as low agreeableness. In some models of personality pathology, antagonism is treated as a domain representing adversarial and uncooperative dispositions that influence social functioning.
