Antagonisme refers to a relationship in which one party opposes, counters, or counteracts another. The term is used in many fields to describe a form of opposition rather than mere dislike. Etymology traces to Greek anti- 'against' and agón 'contest,' and cognates appear in several languages as antagonisme, with slight variations in meaning across disciplines.

In biology and ecology, antagonistic interactions are those in which one organism reduces or harms the fitness of another. Classic examples include predation, parasitism, and parasitoidism, as well as antibiosis and competition for resources.
