Anion exchangers are materials that contain positively charged functional groups attached to a solid support. These positively charged sites attract and bind negatively charged ions, or anions, from a solution. In essence, they facilitate the exchange of anions. The solid support is typically an insoluble polymer, such as polystyrene or cellulose, to which the functional groups are covalently bonded. Common functional groups include quaternary ammonium groups (-N(CH3)3+) or tertiary amine groups (-NR2H+).
The process of anion exchange involves passing a solution containing anions through a bed of the anion
Anion exchangers are widely used in various applications. In water treatment, they are employed to remove undesirable
