Anion exchangers are materials that contain positively charged functional groups attached to a solid support. These positively charged sites attract and bind negatively charged ions, or anions, from a solution. In essence, they facilitate the exchange of anions. The solid support is typically an insoluble polymer, such as polystyrene or cellulose, to which the functional groups are covalently bonded. Common functional groups include quaternary ammonium groups (-N(CH3)3+) or tertiary amine groups (-NR2H+).

The process of anion exchange involves passing a solution containing anions through a bed of the anion exchanger material. As the solution flows, the anions in the solution that have a higher affinity for the positively charged sites on the exchanger will displace the original anions already bound to the exchanger. This displacement is an equilibrium process. Once the exchanger is saturated with the target anions, they can be eluted, or washed off, by passing a solution with a high concentration of a different anion, or a solution of different pH, through the bed. This displaces the bound anions, allowing them to be collected.

Anion exchangers are widely used in various applications. In water treatment, they are employed to remove undesirable anions like nitrates, sulfates, and perchlorates. They are also crucial in analytical chemistry for separating and purifying substances, particularly in chromatography. In the pharmaceutical industry, anion exchangers are used for the purification of proteins and other biomolecules, as well as for the removal of endotoxins. Their ability to selectively bind and release anions makes them versatile tools in chemical and biological processes.
