Animatione refers to a broad range of techniques used to create the illusion of movement in visual media. It involves presenting a sequence of static images, or frames, in rapid succession to trick the viewer's eye into perceiving motion. This can be achieved through various methods, both traditional and digital.

Traditional animation, often called cel animation, involves drawing each frame by hand on transparent sheets called cels. These cels are then photographed in sequence. Stop-motion animation is another traditional technique where physical objects, such as puppets or clay figures, are manipulated in small increments between individually photographed frames.

Digital animation has largely supplanted traditional methods due to its efficiency and versatility. Computer-generated imagery (CGI) uses software to create 2D or 3D models and scenes, which are then animated. This can range from simple character movements to complex photorealistic environments. Motion graphics, a subset of digital animation, focuses on animating graphic elements and text, often used in title sequences, advertisements, and explainer videos.

The fundamental principle behind all animation is persistence of vision, where the human eye retains an image for a fraction of a second after it disappears, allowing the brain to blend the sequential images into a continuous flow of movement. The speed at which these frames are displayed, typically measured in frames per second (fps), directly impacts the smoothness of the perceived motion.
