Analòg refers to a concept that is continuous and varies smoothly rather than being discrete or jumpy. In many physical systems, quantities are naturally analòg. For example, the temperature of a room changes gradually over time, and the speed of a car can take on any value within a range. This stands in contrast to digital systems, which represent information using discrete values, typically binary digits (bits).

The term analòg is often used in the context of electronics and signal processing. An analòg signal is a continuous electrical signal that represents some physical quantity. For instance, the sound wave produced by a voice is an analòg signal, and a microphone converts this sound wave into a corresponding analòg electrical signal. These signals can be amplified, processed, and transmitted. However, analòg signals are susceptible to noise and degradation during transmission or processing, which can alter the information they carry.

Early audio and video recording technologies, such as vinyl records and magnetic tape, were based on analòg principles. These technologies stored information by physically modifying a medium to represent the continuous variations of the original signal. In contrast, modern digital technologies, like CDs and digital video, convert these continuous analòg signals into discrete digital representations. This digital format allows for more robust storage, easier manipulation, and higher fidelity reproduction, as it is less prone to noise and distortion. Despite the prevalence of digital technology, analòg systems are still important in many applications, including sensor technology and some areas of scientific measurement.
