Ampeerimittarit, commonly known as ammeters, are instruments used to measure electric current. This current is quantified in amperes (A). Ammeters are designed to be connected in series with the circuit element through which the current is to be measured. This means that the entire current flowing through the circuit must pass through the ammeter itself.

There are several types of ammeters, including analog and digital versions. Analog ammeters typically utilize a moving coil mechanism where the current flowing through a coil generates a magnetic field that interacts with a permanent magnet, causing a pointer to deflect across a calibrated scale. Digital ammeters, on the other hand, employ electronic circuits to measure the current and display the reading as a numerical value.

When using an ammeter, it is crucial to ensure that it is connected correctly. Reversing the polarity of a DC ammeter can lead to an inaccurate negative reading or, in some cases, damage to the instrument. Ammeters are generally designed to have a very low internal resistance. This is to minimize their impact on the circuit they are measuring, ensuring that the current being measured is not significantly altered by the presence of the ammeter. Different ranges of ammeters are available to measure currents from very small microamperes to very large kiloamperes.
