Amnioektomia refers to the surgical rupture of the amniotic sac, commonly known as breaking the waters. This procedure is often performed during labor to accelerate or induce contractions. It can be done manually by a healthcare provider using a sterile hook-like instrument called an amnihook to pierce the sac. Alternatively, it can occur spontaneously.

The amniotic sac is a membrane that encloses the fetus and contains amniotic fluid. Rupturing this sac releases the amniotic fluid. This release can stimulate the release of prostaglandins, hormones that can help ripen the cervix and increase the frequency and intensity of uterine contractions. Amnioektomia may be considered when labor has not progressed sufficiently or when there are other medical reasons to expedite delivery. The procedure itself is generally quick and painless, though some women may experience a sensation of warmth or a gush of fluid. While generally safe, potential risks include infection, umbilical cord compression, or fetal distress, though these are uncommon. Close monitoring of the mother and baby is standard practice following the procedure.
