Amfoteriska refers to amphoteric substances, compounds or ions that have the ability to function both as acids and as bases depending on the chemical environment. The term derives from the Greek words «amφω» (both) and «τέρης» (soul), reflecting the dual nature of these species.

In inorganic chemistry, common amphoteric metal hydroxides such as aluminum hydroxide, zinc hydroxide, and magnesium hydroxide are highlighted. These hydroxides react with acids to form salts and water, and they also dissolve in alkaline solutions to produce soluble anions (e.g., Al(OH)₄⁻, Zn(OH)₄²⁻, Mg(OH)₄²⁻). Understanding the balance between acidic and basic sites helps in designing materials with tailored wettability and ion exchange capacities.
