Ambidextria is the ability to use both the left and right hands with equal skill and ease. Individuals who possess this trait are known as ambidextrous. While most people have a dominant hand, typically the right hand for the majority of the population, ambidextrous individuals do not show a significant preference for one hand over the other for most tasks. This can extend to writing, throwing, eating, and other fine motor activities.

The development of ambidextria can occur naturally or through training. Some individuals are born with a predisposition towards ambidextria, while others may develop it by consciously practicing with their non-dominant hand. Historically, there have been attempts to train children to be ambidextrous, sometimes with the aim of improving cognitive abilities or compensating for left-handedness, which was historically discouraged. Modern understanding suggests that while ambidextria can be trained, forcing it on individuals may not always be beneficial and could potentially lead to difficulties.

Ambidextrous individuals may find certain activities easier, such as playing musical instruments that require independent hand movements or participating in sports where switching hands can be an advantage. However, for everyday tasks that are designed around a dominant-hand bias, such as using scissors or certain tools, ambidextrous people may adapt by using either hand or a combination thereof. The prevalence of true, natural ambidextria is relatively low in the general population.
