Altriciality refers to a state of development in young animals where they are born or hatched in a helpless condition, requiring extensive care from their parents. Altricial young are typically born blind, deaf, naked, and unable to regulate their own body temperature. They are highly dependent on their parents for food, protection, and warmth. This contrasts with precocial young, which are born in a more advanced state of development and are able to move and feed themselves shortly after birth.
Many species exhibit altriciality, including most mammals, birds, and some reptiles. For example, puppies and kittens
