An altimeter is an instrument used to measure the altitude of an object above a fixed level. This fixed level is typically sea level, but can also be ground level or the base of a specific object. Altimeters are crucial for aviation, mountaineering, and other activities where knowing one's elevation is important.

There are several types of altimeters. The most common in aviation is the aneroid altimeter. This device works by measuring atmospheric pressure. As altitude increases, atmospheric pressure decreases. The aneroid altimeter contains a sealed, flexible metal box called an aneroid capsule. Changes in atmospheric pressure cause this capsule to expand or contract, which in turn moves a needle on a dial calibrated to indicate altitude.

Another type is the barometric altimeter, which is essentially a specialized barometer calibrated to display altitude. Radio altimeters are used primarily by aircraft for low-altitude measurements, often for landing. They emit radio waves and measure the time it takes for the waves to reflect off the ground, calculating the distance. GPS altimeters determine altitude by triangulating the user's position relative to GPS satellites. However, GPS altitude readings can be less accurate than other methods, especially in areas with poor satellite reception.

Altimeters are essential safety devices in aircraft, allowing pilots to maintain safe separation from terrain and other aircraft. In mountaineering, they help climbers track their progress and assess potential hazards.
