Allveesõiduk is the Estonian term for an underwater vehicle. This broad category encompasses any craft designed to operate submerged beneath the surface of the water. Allveesõidukid can range significantly in size, purpose, and complexity, from small, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to large, crewed submarines.

The primary functions of allveesõidukid are diverse. Historically, military submarines have been prominent, utilized for defense, reconnaissance, and offensive operations. However, modern allveesõidukid also serve critical civilian roles. These include scientific research, such as oceanographic studies and marine biology exploration, as well as underwater construction, maintenance, and salvage operations. Deep-sea exploration, reaching parts of the ocean inaccessible to surface vessels, is another key application.

Allveesõidukid can be broadly classified into several types. Manned submersibles require a crew and are often used for exploration or specialized tasks. Unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), further divided into autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), are controlled either independently or via a tether from a surface vessel or shore. AUVs navigate and execute tasks autonomously, while ROVs are directly piloted by human operators. The development of allveesõidukid continues to advance, with ongoing improvements in propulsion, navigation, sensor technology, and depth capabilities.
