Alleelitaajuudet, also known as allele frequencies, refer to the relative proportion of a specific allele within a population's gene pool. An allele is a variant form of a gene. For example, if a gene for eye color has alleles for blue and brown, the allele frequency would indicate how common the blue allele is compared to the brown allele in a given population. These frequencies are crucial in the study of population genetics and evolution.

Allele frequencies are typically expressed as a proportion or a percentage. For instance, if an allele is present in 30% of all the gene copies for that locus in the population, its allele frequency is 0.3 or 30%. The sum of allele frequencies for all alleles at a particular gene locus in a population is always equal to one (or 100%). Changes in allele frequencies over time are the fundamental basis of evolution.

Factors such as mutation, gene flow, genetic drift, and natural selection can all influence allele frequencies. Mutation introduces new alleles, gene flow (migration) can introduce or remove alleles from a population, genetic drift causes random fluctuations in allele frequencies, especially in small populations, and natural selection favors alleles that increase an organism's survival and reproductive success. Understanding allele frequencies allows scientists to track evolutionary changes, assess genetic diversity, and study population structure.
