Allatívusz is a type of vowel harmony in Hungarian grammar. It refers to the change in the quality of a vowel when another vowel is placed before it. This phenomenon occurs in certain combinations of vowels, particularly when the first vowel is a member of the "a" series and the second vowel is a member of the "u" series.

When a word ending in a consonant is disjoined by the allative form of a word that contains the vowel "a", the "a" is replaced by a vowel from the "u" series. This results in the retraction of the vowel, creating the allative form. However, when the first word ends in a vowel or contains a suffix that begins with a vowel from the "a" series, the vowel harmony rule is suspended and the "a" in the suffix of the allative form remains the same.

Allatívusz has several exceptions and irregularities. It is more prominent in the singular and less so in the plural. The rule does not apply in certain cases, such as with words ending in "ak", "el", or "ö". Additionally, when the allative form ends in a consonant pair, the first consonant often affects the vowel change of the second vowel in the "u" series.
