Alkyylihalideja, or alkyl halides, are a class of organic compounds in which a halogen atom is covalently bonded to an alkyl group. The halogen atoms commonly found in alkyl halides are fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), and iodine (I). These compounds can be considered derivatives of alkanes where one or more hydrogen atoms have been replaced by halogen atoms.

The general formula for an alkyl halide is R-X, where R represents an alkyl group (e.g., methyl, ethyl, propyl) and X represents a halogen atom. The properties of alkyl halides vary significantly depending on the nature of the alkyl group and the halogen atom. Generally, they are less polar than alcohols but more polar than alkanes due to the electronegativity difference between carbon and the halogen.

Alkyl halides are important in organic synthesis. They serve as versatile starting materials for a wide range of chemical reactions, including nucleophilic substitution, elimination reactions, and the formation of Grignard reagents. Nucleophilic substitution reactions, such as the SN1 and SN2 mechanisms, allow for the replacement of the halogen atom with other functional groups, leading to the synthesis of ethers, amines, nitriles, and many other organic compounds. Elimination reactions, often carried out under basic conditions, can lead to the formation of alkenes.

Industrially, some alkyl halides have found applications as solvents, refrigerants, and fire retardants, although many of these uses have been restricted due to environmental concerns, particularly regarding ozone depletion for certain chlorinated and brominated compounds.
