Alkydmalinger, known in English as alkyd paints, are oil-based coatings whose binder is an alkyd resin. The resin is produced by esterifying polyols with fatty acids or drying oils and then cross-linking during the drying process. The resulting film is dissolved in organic solvents to create a brush- or spray-applied coating. Alkydmalinger are commonly used on wood, metal, and previously painted substrates where a hard, abrasion-resistant finish is desirable.

Compared with typical water-based paints, alkydmalinger offer superior hardness, wear resistance, and a smooth, glossy appearance, along with good adhesion. They tend to level well and can fill small defects, but they usually require longer drying and cure times. They may shrink slightly as they dry and can yellow with age under prolonged UV exposure. Because they are solvent-based, alkydmalinger emit higher levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and require solvents such as mineral spirits for cleanup, though newer waterborne alkyd formulations aim to reduce odor and VOC content.

Common applications include interior trim, doors, cabinets, and exterior joinery, as well as certain industrial or marine coatings where durability is important. Practical considerations during use include adequate ventilation, avoiding very thick coats, and allowing sufficient recoat time between layers.

Safety and environmental aspects: solvent-based alkydmalinger contribute to indoor air pollution and pose flammability concerns; disposal and cleanup follow local regulations. In response to environmental concerns, low-VOC and waterborne alkyd formulations have expanded options while maintaining many performance characteristics of traditional alkyds.
