Alkuarvoa is Finnish for "initial value" and denotes the value of a variable at the start of a process, calculation, or model. In mathematics and related fields, the initial value provides the starting point from which a system evolves or a sequence progresses. The concept is used in problems that require a defined beginning, such as solving differential equations, recurrence relations, and numerical simulations.

In continuous models, the initial value appears as an initial condition. For example, in the differential equation dy/dt = f(t, y) with y(t0) = y0, the quantity y0 is the initial value that determines how the solution unfolds over time. In discrete settings, a recurrence relation a_{n+1} = g(a_n) starts from an initial value a_0 = a0, which influences all subsequent terms.
