Alküülliitiume are organometallic compounds containing a lithium-carbon bond, where an alkyl group is bonded to a lithium atom. These compounds are widely used in organic synthesis as strong bases and nucleophiles. The general formula for an alkyl lithium is R-Li, where R represents an alkyl group. Common examples include methyllithium (CH3Li), ethyllithium (CH3CH2Li), and n-butyllithium (CH3CH2CH2CH2Li).
