Alasektorid, or sub-sectors, are subdivisions of economic activity that break down the three broad sectors of the economy into more specific activities. They are used in national accounts and international classifications to measure output, employment, and productivity at a finer level than the broad sector categories. Economies are commonly described as primary, secondary, and tertiary sectors; alasektorid describe the individual activities within each sector, such as farming in agriculture or manufacturing in industry.

Examples of sub-sectors include: in the primary sector, agriculture, forestry, fishing, and mining; in the secondary sector, manufacturing, construction, and utilities; and in the tertiary sector, wholesale and retail trade, transportation and storage, accommodation and food service, information and communications, financial and insurance activities, real estate, professional and technical services, education, health and social work, and arts and recreation. This level of detail supports economic analysis, policy design, and regional planning by showing which activities contribute to growth and employment.

Classification systems such as the ISIC (International Standard Industrial Classification) and NACE (European Classification of Economic Activities) define alasektorid and assign codes to them. In practice, countries adapt these systems for national statistics, resulting in country-specific sub-sector lists. Alasektorid are dynamic, with revisions aligning with economic evolution and statistical needs; changes can affect historical series and cross-country comparability.
