alagutakba

Alagutakba is a traditional method of fishing in some indigenous communities of the Arctic regions. It involves the use of a collapsible net to catch fish in shallow waters, such as ponds, lakes, and slow-moving rivers. The name "Alagutakba" is of Inupiat origin, referring to activities of this nature.

In operations, a group of people work together to construct and lower the collapsible net into the water. The process starts with the creation of a framework out of lengths of rod or willow branches. A mesh of cord and netting, usually made of plant fibers, is then stretched and tied across this framework, creating an enclosure. When it's complete, the enclosure is plunged vertically into a confined area of water. Local fish are trapped inside when the gate-like entrance is secured.
