Akronyymeja are abbreviations formed from the initial letters or syllables of a longer expression, used to shorten names of organizations, technologies, policies, and concepts. The term is the Finnish plural of akronyymi, corresponding to the English word acronym. The Finnish word derives from the English term, which itself traces to Greek roots meaning “edge” or “top” and “name.”

Two main types exist: initialisms, in which each letter is pronounced separately (for example NASA or GPS in many languages), and true acronyms, which are spoken as a single word (for example NATO or radar). In Finnish usage, some akronyymeja function as ordinary nouns and can take inflection, enabling phrases such as NASA:n hallinto or NATO:n sääntely, while others are primarily used as compact references.

Orthography and style vary by context. Most akronyymeja are written in uppercase, though periods between letters are still seen in older texts or certain style guides. In modern Finnish, the letters may be written without punctuation, and some newer terms are introduced with their long form before the acronym to aid reader comprehension.
