Ajatuskäyttäytymismalli, often translated as "thought-behavioral model" or "cognitive behavioral model," refers to a framework that links a person's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It suggests that our interpretations of events, rather than the events themselves, significantly influence our emotional and behavioral responses. This model posits that maladaptive or irrational thought patterns can lead to negative emotions and problematic behaviors. Conversely, identifying and modifying these unhelpful thought patterns can lead to improved emotional well-being and more adaptive behaviors.

This model is a cornerstone of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), a widely used form of psychotherapy. CBT practitioners work with clients to identify cognitive distortions, such as overgeneralization, black-and-white thinking, or catastrophizing. By challenging and restructuring these distorted thoughts, individuals can develop more balanced and realistic perspectives. This, in turn, can alleviate symptoms of various mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The focus is on present-day problems and developing practical coping strategies. The underlying principle is that by changing how we think, we can change how we feel and act.
