Aivosähkökäyrät, commonly known as EEG (electroencephalogram) in English, is a neurophysiological monitoring method that records the electrical activity of the brain. This activity is detected by electrodes placed on the scalp. These electrodes pick up tiny electrical signals generated by the brain's neurons. These signals are then amplified and displayed as wavy lines on a computer screen or paper, representing different brain wave frequencies and amplitudes.

EEG is a non-invasive and painless procedure. It is widely used in clinical settings for diagnosing and monitoring various neurological conditions. These include epilepsy, where it can help identify seizure activity, as well as sleep disorders, brain tumors, and encephalopathy (brain dysfunction). The interpretation of EEG results requires specialized training as the patterns can be complex and vary significantly between individuals and in different states of consciousness. Different brain wave frequencies, such as delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma waves, are associated with different states of arousal and cognitive activity.
