Aikataajuusesitys, often translated as time-frequency representation, is a method used in signal processing to analyze and visualize how the frequency content of a signal changes over time. Traditional methods like the Fourier Transform provide information about the frequency components present in an entire signal, but they do not reveal when these frequencies occur. In contrast, an aikataajuusesitys offers a two-dimensional depiction, with time on one axis and frequency on the other, showing the intensity or magnitude of each frequency component at specific moments in time.

Common techniques for generating aikataajuusesityksiä include the Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) and wavelet transforms. The STFT divides the signal into short, overlapping segments and computes the Fourier Transform for each segment, providing a localized frequency analysis. Wavelet transforms use basis functions called wavelets, which are localized in both time and frequency, offering a more adaptable resolution that can better capture transient or rapidly changing signal features.
